Gareth Mewes

Gareth has been a violinist since he was 3. He fell in love with music thanks to his parents CD collection and begged them for a violin. He studied classical music for 17 years with various teachers at the Woolongong Conservatorium of Music, and achieved his AmusA diploma at 16 years old. He played folk music at the National Folk Festival and Illawarra Folk Festivals during his childhood. Moving to Brisbane for university, Gareth ventured into Jazz and other styles of music. After winning a competition in 2015 to perform with The Cat Empire, he completed his Bachelor of Music in Jazz (2018) and currently tours in festival favourite Gypsy band Cigàny Weaver.

Gareth, with Cigany Weaver, has performed at Woodford Folk Festival, Dark Mofo Festival (Hobart), Caloundra music festival, Bellingen Winter festival and many more around Australia. He recently has been performing with Mood Swing & Chevvy Bass, August River Band, The Dawn Light, Fred Smith, The Long Johns and with Mustered Courage at CMC Rocks festival. He has been in the studio for Captain Dreamboat, Desmond Cheese, Sian Evans, Peppermint Ollie and other Brisbane musicians.

In his high school years, Gareth earnt his AmuSA Diploma on violin and also learnt piano and guitar. Using busking to support himself through he went on tours of Asia and Europe with Bluescope Steel Youth Orchestra, and played Irish music at festivals with a youth band called ”Replay”. Gareth works as a performer with over 10 projects, as a violin teacher and composes his own electronica at home.
